Andrew Wilkinson Photography: Incidental Beauty. Andrew Wilkinson Photography: Incidental Beauty.
The exact pressure of a hand, the sharpness of steel, the patience of the craftsman, the hidden grain of the tree itself. It is waste, technically — something swept from the bench and scattered on the floor — and yet it often possesses more immediate beauty than the finished object it came from.

John Ruskin famously said: “You haven’t looked at a tree until you’ve drawn it.” This thought underscores his belief that true observation and understanding of nature only come through the slow, careful, and active process of drawing. For me, one of the closest parallels for photography comes from Dorothea Lange: “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” I think that’s brilliant, as it nicely flips Ruskin’s idea slightly, but the core is the same: the act of photographing deepens perception. Similar principles apply across all creative forms. But for a general life application I like what is attributed to Stephen Covey: “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”
Have a nice day.
